About AVID

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What is AVID?

The mission of AVID is to ensure that students who are capable of completing a college preparatory path will be able to do the following:

  • succeed in the most rigorous curriculum,
  • enter mainstream activities in school,
  • increase their enrollment in four-year colleges,
  • become educated, responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

AVID is about learning to learn efficiently and powerfully. The goal is to help every student become an organized, successful, thinking student who is on a determined path to college.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts more than 800,000 students in 44 states and 16 other countries/territories.

School Wide AVID

The educational benefits of AVID are not just for students selected into the AVID program, but for ALL students at Claggett Creek.  As a school, Claggett Creek’s mission and goal is that all students graduate and are prepared for a successful life.  To do this, many of the successful and effective learning and teaching strategies from AVID have been implemented by all teachers… in all classes… for all students.  AVID strategies that a student at Claggett Creek can expect to encounter in any class school wide would include:

  • Cornell notes
  • AVID critical reading strategies
  • Philosophical Chair and Socratic Seminar discussions
  • AVID organization strategies and expectations

AVID Site Team

The direction and leadership of Claggett Creek’s AVID program starts with our AVID site team.  The site team is comprised of the principal, the AVID coordinators, the school counselors, the AVID elective teachers, a collection of other teachers and classified staff, AVID tutors, and parents of AVID students.  In addition, AVID students are even invited to present at most of the site team meetings.  The primary purpose of the  AVID site team is to review program goals and data, develop support strategies for AVID students, and plan AVID events–such as parent nights and college visits.

If you are a parent of an AVID student, and are wanting to receive more information regarding joining the AVID site team, please feel free to contact one of our AVID co-coordinators.
